FAQs Sinks

Stainless Steel 18/10 Sinks

Can stainless steel sinks rust?

This question can be answered with a definite "No", provided that the sink is cleaned regularly and only exposed to typical domestic wear and tear. Please follow the advice below regarding using and caring for your stainless steel sink:

Remove dirt and limescale deposits on a regular basis.

Do not use cleaning agents containing chlorine (generally sodium hypochlorite) or hydrochloric acid.

If you use steel wool for cleaning, it must be made of non-rusting stainless steel.

Avoid lengthy contact with salty liquids.

Avoid direct or prolonged contact with rusting iron objects (cast-iron pans or iron filings).

Do not use your sink for dyeing or bleaching fabric or hair.

How do stains appear on the surface of the sink?

These stains usually involve limescale deposits, which appear depending on the hardness of the drinking water (information supplied by regional water suppliers). These limescale deposits retain dirt particles to a greater extent, with the result that unattractive stains form in only a short period of time.

Small iron and rust particles from the water mains network may also make it appear as though there are rusty marks, particularly in the case of new buildings or when repairs are being carried out to the mains pipelines, and where cast-iron water pipes are involved.

How can stains be prevented?

Such stains are best prevented by wiping the sink dry after use. If stains do appear, however, remove them using any standard commercial cleaning agent suitable for cleaning stainless steel sinks, which also dissolves limescale.

Why do new sinks show the first scratches within a few weeks of use?

How can these first scratches in stainless steel sinks be minimised?

Our stainless steel sinks are manufactured with great care and in accordance with the latest production and processing techniques. The stainless steel we use is subject to strict quality controls ensuring a consistently high quality of sink. Current state-of-the-art technology cannot, however, guarantee that 18/10 stainless steel is completely scratch-resistant. Thus the appearance of minor scratches is normal. Regular care using recommended cleaning agents such as BLANCOPOLISH and SPONTEX stainless steel sponges will ensure a silky smooth, shining and relatively scratch-resistant surface which is very durable after approx. 2-4 weeks.

What qualities should I look for in a stainless steel sink?

Check on the quality. Premium quality stainless steel is always 18/10, because this represents the addition of chrome and nickel to the steel, which guarantees best performance, corrosion resistance and durability.

Why is weight important?

You will find that more steel has been used in the manufacture of a heavier gauge sink, with resulting increase in quality and durability. A lightweight sink is often made from thin steel to achieve cost savings.

What is the “flex” test?

Quality sinks made of thicker stainless steel will resist movement of the drainer if pressure is exerted by hand.

SILGRANIT® PuraDur® Sinks

What is the material SILGRANIT® PuraDur® made of?

SILGRANIT® PuraDur® consists of up to 80% natural granite. In our granite kitchen sinks , the granite is combined with an acrylic matrix, ceramic and colour pigments to give it its unbeatable characteristics.

Is the material heat resistant?

Yes, SILGRANIT® PuraDur® is heat resistant to 280 °C.

How sensitive is SILGRANIT® PuraDur® to scratches and chipping?

SILGRANIT® PuraDur® is as hard as stone, which makes it resistant to scratching and cutting. The normal impacts and blows such as those caused by pots and pans and falling objects, e.g. glasses, will not cause it to crack or chip.

Is the material safe for use with food?

Yes, SILGRANIT® PuraDur® is perfectly safe for food use and completely hygienic.

How do I clean the surface?

SILGRANIT® PuraDur® granite kitchen sinks are very easy to clean. Stains and traces of use are easy to remove with a scouring sponge and a little water. For more stubborn marks, we recommend the use of a standard commercial cleaning product or BLANCOACTIV.

Do sinks made of SILGRANIT® PuraDur® discolour over time?

No. The material is cast in a single pouring, and so is coloured through completely. Normal household use does not cause any discernible changes in colour. The colour also remains true in direct sunlight.

What can cause the dark marks and lines in the sink?

Because the surface of SILGRANIT® PuraDur® is very hard and extremely wear resistant, metal objects (pots, saucepans, skillets etc.) can leave marks on the kitchen sink where they rub against it. These marks show up dark on a light-coloured sink.

How do I remove these marks?

These marks are easy to remove using a scouring sponge and a little water. For more stubborn marks, we recommend the use of a commercial scouring powder or liquid.

Can discoloration and stains/marks occur on SILGRANIT® PuraDur®?

No. Discoloration and marks/stains are the result of limescale deposits that, when dry, absorb liquids such as coffee, tea or red wine. This then creates the impression of discoloration of the kitchen sink surface.

Limescale deposits are easy to remove using a commercial washing detergent, acetic acid or similar.

Is SILGRANIT® PuraDur® patented and certified?

Yes, BLANCO holds seven exclusive patents for SILGRANIT® PuraDur®, which makes this material the only one of its kind in the world. Further confirmation of its excellent properties comes in the form of 3 neutral quality certificates from the LGA Nuremberg.

Ceramic Sinks

What are the characteristic features of a ceramic sink?

BLANCO ceramic sinks are also made from natural raw materials and using traditional craftsmanship. Every ceramic sink is unique, which means that it is impossible to avoid minor tolerances in dimensions and colours.

How strong is a ceramic sink?

Because of the exclusive manufacturing process, all BLANCO ceramic sinks have a very hard, strong surface that is notable for being resistant to scratching, cutting and impacts. However, damage may well occur if an exceptionally hard and heavy object comes into contact with the surface from a height.

Are ceramic sinks easy to look after?

BLANCO ceramic sinks are very easy to look after. The surface of a BLANCO ceramic sink is particularly hard, smooth, and perfectly closed. These properties mean that dirt is unable to penetrate the material, so that wiping the dirt off the surface is all it takes to clean the sink.

What happens if acids or lyes come into contact with the ceramic sink?

All BLANCO ceramic sinks are resistant to the usual domestic acids and lyes.

Is a ceramic sink resistant to heat?

Ceramic sinks are extremely resistant to heat; they are not affected by normal kitchen temperatures.

Are ceramic sinks food-safe?

All BLANCO ceramic sinks are tested for their safety with foodstuffs.

Can the colour change over time?

No changes in colour occur, whether as the result of the direct influence of the sun or of normal domestic use, because all BLANCO ceramic sinks are lightfast. This means that the sink can also be put in front of the window.

If limescale deposits form over the course of time, it is possible that they may discolour. In this case wine vinegar is the most effective solution to this problem.

What is PuraPlus® ?

PuraPlus® is a special water-repellent seal that causes water to simply run down the surface. This makes it more difficult for residue (e.g. limescale) to adhere to the surface, and so makes it easier to clean.

How are ceramic sinks cleaned?

We recommend the usual domestic all-purpose cleaning products and soft sponges or microfibre cloths for cleaning ceramic sinks.

Bio-Boy, BLANCOANTIKALK and VIS (JIF) are effective for removing more stubborn dirt, such as limescale deposits and metal marks. Sinks with the Pura-Plus® finish should be cleaned with BLANCO Pura-Plus® Liquid to refresh the finish.
