It is very common for homeowners to purchase a new home with the intention of revamping and remodeling right away. Some buyers however, are unfortunately forced to remodel due to unforeseen circumstances. Quick and urgent remodels often require the attention of design professionals who are talented enough to take a drab and damaged space and turn it into a stunning new room in the blink of an eye.
Donna McMahon of Kitchens by Wedgewood in Louisville, Colorado shares her story of racing the clock to remodel a kitchen for a couple who experienced a burst pipe prior to closing. Even under a time crunch, Donna was able to take a modest kitchen and transform it into a beautiful, open space with the help of eye-catching products like a BLANCO SILGRANIT® sink. To see more of Donna’s design and how she achieved it, check out the interview below.
Donna, the kitchen transformation is absolutely gorgeous! What did you find to be your biggest design challenge?
DM: Thank you! The biggest challenge was to work around an existing column/structure which had really hindered the previous kitchen layout. Also we had to maintain the original footprint for the most part. I was able to push the peninsula out about a one foot, which made a tremendous difference of space inside the U-shape area and around the range.
What made you choose BLANCO for your design?
DM: I love BLANCO sinks and always recommend them to clients because there are so many choices. I especially love the SILGRANIT collection because of the ease of maintenance and their color selections. Stainless is not for everyone, and these sinks serve up a big solution in choice and performance!
How did BLANCO help create the perfect kitchen environment?
DM: This is a modest kitchen, and the sink work area is in an exposed section of the walkway to the family room. The award winning BLANCO PERFORMA™ Medium 1-3/4 Low Divide offered the perfect solution for easy concealment with its compact depth and size. The Café Brown color helps the sink disappear into the countertop while giving the user that ease of maintenance by not showing water stains – since it does not require constant wiping or cleaning. Any washed or unwashed items sit deep into the bowls which have that great low section wall. The low divide is a favorite detail about this model, because she has use of two sink sections, but the benefit of feeling like it is one large sink (which works for those oversized items). The homeowners have two little kids and a large circle of friends that they entertain in their new home. They love how the sink items never feel crowded in this BLANCO model!
What helped you to utilize the space in the new design so much better than the original while still keeping the original footprint intact?
DM: I was able to eliminate a blind corner that is a minimally useful cabinet solution. I created enough space in doing that to give the users a trash pullout (eliminating a trash can on the floor), a huge set of drawers to store utensils of all kinds plus a full collection of pots, pans and dishes. Those two units together made a huge difference in a kitchen that did not change its footprint very much.
Did the fact that you were under a time restraint with the remodel have an impact on your design?
DM: No, not at all. I knew this family from a previous project, so we understood how to communicate about needs, wants and possibilities. Also, they trusted me to help them move in the best direction for a better layout. Solving the design predicament was a smooth experience, and it turned out the lead-time for the cabinetry fell right into the reconstruction/renovation schedule!
