Make Your Stainless Sparkle: How-To Properly Maintain Stainless Steel Sinks

February 28, 2019 By BLANCO

FORMERA Super Single

Stainless steel in the kitchen features a dazzling and elegant style, but much of the beauty of stainless steel lies in its long-lasting wear. Stainless steel sinks and faucets are virtually carefree, but can be harmed by using the wrong products to clean it. To keep your sink sparkling in mint condition, BLANCO’s team of experts provides a few helpful tips:

Choose the right cleaning materials

Avoid using abrasive cleaners on the sink, such as scrub pads, steel wool, and bleach, which can dull and scratch the surface. Instead, use mild, non-abrasive cleaning agents like Bar Keepers Friend, Bon Ami, Gordon’s Miracle Shine, Zud, or Soft Scrub to preserve the original finish of the sink.

Minimize scratching and rust

Even with careful use, stainless steel sinks are prone to scratching over time. While this is unavoidable, BLANCO experts suggest Bar Keepers Friend can be applied to minimize the appearance of scratches. Using the soft side of a wet sponge, rub down the sink in the direction of the grain, rinsing thoroughly afterwards. This method blends scratches into the patina of your sink. Using this method, Bar Keepers Friend can also be used to remove residue on the sink, from minerals in your water, coffee and other products of day to day use.

Stainless steel sinks will never rust, and if rust appears in the sink it can typically be traced back to items left in it, like cans and cast-iron pans. These deposits can be washed away like any other dirt, using the method discussed above.

Protect and accessorize

Adding a sink grid will protect the finish of stainless steel sinks from dishes and utensils. Grids sit on the sink bottom on non-skid protective feet allowing water to drain below dishes. These grids prevent scratches and stains — BLANCO’s grids are custom designed to perfectly fit any of BLANCO stainless steel sinks.
