This past October, BLANCO ran the second annual #BLANCODreamKitchen contest encouraging designers across the country to submit an original dream kitchen design featuring a BLANCO IKON® Apron Front Single Sink and the BLANCO ARTONA® faucet.
With dozens of entries received, BLANCO asked a panel of design professionals to choose the top designs. In second place was Mick Ricereto of Philadelphia. We interviewed Mick to learn exactly what was the inspiration for this dream kitchen.
Q: What was your inspiration behind this design?
A: I’ve recently been inspired by the latest wave of pure architecture from Europe. It often balances modern, rational design against these wonderful backdrops of nature. When the natural world offers up so much random beauty, it leaves room for the architecture to be crisp and clean among the mountains and trees.
Q: Did you have a certain design theme in mind that you wanted to convey in your design?
A: My main theme was a combination of openness and unity. I looked to keep the corners of the space open to the outside or to other rooms while tying all of the vertical and horizontal elements together with the same widths or proportions. This technique helps the eye to move in a slow and balanced motion about the space for a restful environment.
Q: How did BLANCO’s products make your design come to life?
A: I’ve always liked the SILGRANIT® finish and wanted to use the dark black tone in my design. With so many of my elements being straight and sharp, the curves of ARTONA® and IKON® are a nice touch; echoing for instance the grand piano and the natural shapes of the outdoors.
Q: What was the most challenging part of your design process?
A: My biggest challenge was starting from a clean sheet of paper. I had an image in my mind’s eye of how this dream house would look and feel but sometimes it is hard to start designing an idea when there are no constraints. To help me out, I began creating the space where the stairs and corridors would be in relation to the windows and then began to fill in the living space around my make believe design.
